Why You Should Never Publish Your First Draft

6732863457_4175ebea30_mMy previous post about Zujava is a prime example of why you shouldn’t publish your first draft. In an effort to get some new info on this blog quickly, I made mistakes.

Ah. . . yes. . .the reason you don’t write a first draft and immediately publish it. You WILL make mistakes!

Sometimes just waiting a day and then reading your writing aloud can improve it dramatically. We don’t make good editors of things we’ve just written.

Now that I’ve set the example of what not to do, let me clear up the mistakes I made!

In this case, they were mistakes of omission. I forgot to include some necessary information.

1. Those of you interested in writing for Zujava might be interested in seeing some things I’ve written there. Keep in mind that I write about things that interest me and your topics can be completely different.
My Experience with Bioidentical Hormones

The Big Chicken

National Bathroom Reading Month

National Gummi Worm Day

Samaritan’s Feet

How to Write an Effective Thesis Statement

National Banana Split Day

How to Create an Operation Christmas Child Shoebox

2. I also forgot to mention that writing for a content writing site is a craft, a skill to be learned. It’s not exactly the same as writing for a blog or a magazine or other forms of online writing. To me, it’s more like an artistic creation, the writing equivalent of scrapbooking. And that’s one of the reasons I enjoy it so much!

3. You won’t get rich! Yes, you can make money, but there is no such thing as a get-rich-by-writing scheme. Like any other form of writing you must be productive. The more words you type and the better you get at stringing them together, the more likely you are to make money. But it takes time, effort, and a pretty extensive portfolio to make a lot of money with content writing. It also takes a little knowledge of sales, which you can learn by visiting the Zujava forums and studying leaves created by experts.

So, now that I’ve cleared up my mistakes, I remind you again not to publish something you’ve just written and never send a first draft to an editor or publisher. In my case, this was a pretty easy fix, but sometimes the answer isn’t so simple and you can end up looking foolish. Your writing reputation is at stake so always aim for excellence and sometimes excellence means waiting a day or two and revising like crazy! Sign up for Zujava.com: Simple online publishing.

Ha! This made me smile as I know what you mean. We've all hit send before we should have. In fact, I've learned the hard way that sometimes not even the second or third draft should be published either ;).

Hugs to you friend. Good reminder as I'm working on an article that is due in a week. (Not for pay though!) I don't really feel like writing is a gift, but the topic is one that I love (field trips) so hopefully my heart will make up for my lack of skill. :-) I appreciate your tips and reminders though!

I hope your summer is going well and your comment about our sons being gone was not being a miserable friend at all. It helps sometimes to have a friend that gets what you are going through. I am hoping to be in Charlotte in the next couple of weeks and would love to chat sometime! Know you are welcome to call here too!

Hugs to you friend!
